Choosing The Perfect Wedding Photographer - A Business Decision or Not?

When I was thinking about how people choose a wedding photographer it struck me that there are two very different ways of thinking. The first is to look at the cost and it is a decision made almost entirely on budget and another item ticked off the "to do" list. The second is a more emotional decision - look for a photographer who's work you love and then see if you can afford their fee.

So that was what I was contemplating whilst thinking of my title. As I was writing the title I thought about how we sell our wedding photography or perhaps more accurately how people buy from us. It may surprise some of you to learn that for us it's also very much an affair of the heart and not a business transaction. That's not to say that we don't have a minimum price below which we are unlikely to book - of course we do - we have to make a living and we have to cover the costs of the excellent products and albums we offer. Second best simply isn't good enough for us.

In order for us to in many instances stand out in the rain, deal with cheeky, often worse for wear guests sometimes difficult family relationships with tact and diplomacy, look after and almost pamper not just the bride but those around her all day long and then at the end of the day still produce our best work ever (because we are only ever as good as our last wedding) there has to be something more in it for us than money alone. I suppose what I am referring to is job satisfaction in its broadest sense.

So we start off with four people - the couple and us. The relationship between us needs to be pretty equal in order for it to work on the day - i.e. we need to want to photograph their wedding as much, if not more, as they want us to photograph it for them.

Think about it. Does the most amazing, special day of your entire life want to be just another mark on the photographer's year planner until they have their quota filled for the year? Of course not! Ideally you want your photographers to be looking forward to photographing your wedding and spending the day with you because, believe me, if they are not then it will, no matter how hard they try on the day be reflected in some way in the pictures. The number of times we go just that little bit further, stay just a few moments longer, watch a little more carefully because we suspect something a little special is about to happen and are rewarded with some beautiful moments and expressions is high. Not everything happens just when you expect it to on a wedding day or just how you are expecting it to happen.

Take the signing of the register picture for example. One never to be missed at every wedding - with the increase in civil ceremonies and peculiar registrars it's also one of the shots which is getting more and more regimented and unemotional to shoot. It's a set up. One of the "must have"pictures for the album. But do you know that virtually every time the couple kiss after signing the register as a set up shot as the photographer stands down and the guests are invited up to take their shots the couples nearly always 99/100 times have another moment when they kiss? They can't help themselves. This is a private moment between two people who are so lost in each other they become the only two people in a crowded room. It's one not to be missed.

Another example of this is the confetti picture. We get some great shots of this. But what happens immediately after the confetti has been thrown? Either one of two things - if not both - firstly some people will try to stuff the confetti down the front of the brides dress - this makes a good "fun" picture with great expressions. Secondly flower girls and little children from the wedding will start gathering up the confetti. They are drawn to it like a magnet. Now there's two ways to capture this second photo opportunity if you are going to - the first (rather boring if you are not careful) is to simply take the shot, the second however is to get down to the kiddies level and take the shot from their angle - it makes a great shot and well worth the effort. That same principle can be applied to photographing kids anytime at a wedding. Get down on their level - see the world as they see it - you will be rewarded with some interesting pictures.

These are just two examples from the many moments that go to make a wedding day. I'm a romantic at heart and I very much shoot for expression - specifically the expressions of love and affection between two people. Now that isn't just limited to the bride and groom. I love the moment when the Father of the bride sees his daughter for the first time on the wedding day for example. Nearly always tough men soften and you can see the love in their eyes. Nearly always the bride looks expectantly at her father as if almost seeking approval for one last time but the shot that many photographers miss is the mother of the bride watching all this going on. She loves them both dearly. She's probably been a party to the bride choosing the dress and helping her to get dressed on the wedding morning. She's as excited about her husband's reaction to his daughter as the bride is. This is mums' moment too.

So now I've talked a little about why wedding photography is an affair of the heart for us what about you? What makes you consider a particular photographer over another? Is it a cost thing or is it a passion for what they do and offer? Without knowing the photographer can you envisage them at your wedding and imagine the pictures they may take of you and your family for you? Or is the album manufacturer more important to you than the pictures within the album? They remain faceless until after the day because it's simply another box ticked on the long list of things you have "to do" before the day. It's not a reality even in your imagination.

Do you think that you might be able to "barter down" your photographer in price to photograph your day for you, sometimes to the point that, as in other wedding services you have bought in, it becomes a game of wills to see who will give the most before walking away? If you really like the images of the photographer with whom you are entering into negotiation then you have to be prepared to accept the consequences of possibly losing their booking. You might end up with a real bargain but there's also a great chance that you will end up with all of nothing.

Conversely do you simply love what they offer and if your budget will allow you're going to have them? If you do this will come across to your photographer and there is a chance that even if they are slightly above your budget if they have any room to maneuver on what is included - say by decreasing the album size or number of pictures initially included then your photographer may be willing to try to compromise to an affordable price for you.

John Ruskin - a much more intelligent person than I once famously said:

"It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little. When you pay too much you lose a little money. That is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing that you bought was incapable of doing the thing that you bought it to do! The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It cannot be done.... And if you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk that you run. And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better. There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper. And the people, who consider price alone, are this man's lawful prey."

I know I'm biased but he could have been talking about wedding photography.

What an honor to be able to document KRAIG & TIFFANY'S November 11, 2011 wedding in Fresno, CA.

Kraig & Tiffany planned their destination wedding in Fresno (long distance) from their home in Alaska.

Everything turned out wonderfully under the care of their chosen wedding planning consultant (Weddings By Cassandra ~ 559-474-7206).

The couple chose to add some very personal and unique touches to their wedding as you will see in the photos below.

Just to mention a few of unique touches that really stood out:

1. Their wedding favors were truffles in personalized boxes for each guest, with each box having the couple's thumb prints overlapping each other. You can't get much more personalized than that!

2. The couple chose to commemorate their special day by encasing a bottle of wine in special keepsake wooden box (to be opened and drank on their 1 year anniversary). The box had the following words written on top: "May Our Love Be Like Good Wine, Grow Stronger As It Grows Older." - Old English Toast

3. Rather than simply having their guests sign a traditional guest book, the couple had their guests, stamp their thumb print on a drawn tree (see photos below), and sign their name next to their thumb print. The result is a lasting Tree/Record of the couple's beloved guests. LOVE THIS IDEA!!

During the ceremony each person drinks from a spout to symbolize both individuality and unity. The vase is one-of-a-kind handcrafted with a braided handle. Crafting your own homemade chocolate wedding favors has become, in many circles, an integral part of the wedding planning process. For many this is a wonderful option for bridal shower favors, but homemade chocolate wedding favors are equally great for the wedding itself.

Regardless of when and where you make use of your homemade chocolate favors, the time spent making them is an event that the bride and her bridesmaids can look back on as a fun evening of laughter for years to come. It can be a wonderful time of crafting where the music was playing, the chocolate was plentiful, and the laughter was nearly endless.

But what options do you have if you want to create (or at least collect) your own chocolate wedding favors without giving in to the exhausted standby of Jordan Almonds wrapped in a sheer piece of organza tied closed with a ribbon?

One of the most popular options, though rarely attempted, is homemade truffles. These sinfully delicious treats are bound to please your guests. Nearly everyone loves the sinfully rich indulgence of truffles, but few realize how accessible recipes are - and they are really not that difficult to make for someone who knows their way around a kitchen.

Renting a good tent is important when planning an outdoor wedding. While tents provide a cozy and personal touch to the whole outdoor wedding décor, they also shield you and your guests from unfavorable weather conditions. Tents are also more flexible than existing facilities because you have more options regarding where and how you want to have your wedding. However, they are more expensive and can cost you around $3,000 to $6,000 without the extras such as lighting, flooring, and the cost of delivery, setup, and removal.

Types of Wedding Tents:

These are some of the popular tents that you may want to check out before making a decision.

Party Canopy: This is a lightweight tent designed to protect from sun and rain. Installation is easy, and inexpensive to rent in comparison to other types.

Pop-up Canopy: Another lightweight tent with collapsible-frame fabric. Installation is also easy.

Frame Tent: A tent with a metal frame having no center poles. The rental company usually installs it.

Tension tent: This type is built with high center poles, a steeply sloped ceiling, with a more open feeling inside of the tent.

Pole Tent: This type has poles around the perimeter and in the center, which is very practical for harsher weather conditions. The rental company will install it.

Location and Flooring:

The best location for setting up the wedding tent is on an even high ground, and should be free of overhead utility lines. If the site has uneven terrain or experiences high rainfall, try to include plywood or plastic flooring. Plywood can be expensive but it will provide a durable raised floor and is suitable for almost any type of terrain. Plastic floor is ideal for paved surfaces and is much cheaper than plywood floors. Also consider parquet-wood floor which can be used as the dance floor.

Size of the Tent:

There’s no harm in renting a tent that’s a little larger than actually required. Think of a tent size in which your guests can be comfortably seated. Here’s how you should estimate tent seating specifications:

All chairs in rows: 6 square feet per person
Round tables: 12 square feet per person
Rectangular tables: 8 square feet per person
Cocktails and receptions: 8 square feet per person

Along with these specifications, figure in the bar area, cake table, band area buffet tables, and dance floor.

Color of the Tent:

The traditional color for tents is white but you can choose from a wide variety and combinations, depending on the theme and mood of your wedding. For example, if you want a romantic starlit night sky to be part of your wedding, rent a tent with a translucent ceiling. Sidewalls can be solid white for more private affairs, clear vinyl to let in natural light, and cathedral-window walls for a more decorative touch.

Optional:

Remember that every rental firm also provides optional accessories which can really underscore the décor of your wedding and the tent. Choose those that will fit in to the theme and tone of the wedding. Other accessories that you can’t do without may include air-conditioning (for areas with extreme climates), carpeting, portable bars, decorative lighting etc.

To those of us living in the twenty first century the tradition that the color of the wedding dress must be white seems like a tradition that must go all the way back to the garden of Eden. After all, wasn't Eve's fig leaf ensemble not made of white satin? Of course we know that it was not, but the tradition of a bride wearing white is so ingrained in us that we tend to assume that it goes back so far that using any color other than white is unthinkable. In reality, however, the tradition of the white wedding dress is really a rather new development.

Indeed the white wedding dress did not really catch on until sometime early in the twentieth century as the Hollywood starlets began to have money enough to afford and maintain a pure white dress. Prior to that time most wedding dresses were of a variety of colors that reflected the tradition of the local culture and / or the ability of the family to afford a new dress at all.

As the white wedding dress tradition begins to fade, the choice of a wedding dress in a color other than white becomes both personal and practical. It depends on what she likes and feels beautiful in, but at the same time don't forget that their are practical factors outside her simple tastes that any bride should weigh before making the decision:

The Bride's Skin Tone: There is no one color that all people can wear well. Most women know what colors best suit them and therefore should consider the possibility of choosing a wedding dress color from the palate that best suits them - after all, they want to look their best on their wedding day, don't they?

The Decor of the Church and Reception Venue: No one wants to look back at their wedding pictures only to discover that their dress clashed horribly with the decor - or worse, caused them to disappear into the background of their own wedding!
The Colors of the Season: No bride should be a slave to seasonal colors, but do take a moment to consider how the seasonal colors at the wedding will impact the look of the wedding dress she is choosing.

The Bridal Traditions of Her Background: This might mean traditional white but it might not. For example a bride of Asian decent might want to consider the tradition of some Asian cultures of red for a wedding dress color. For some descendants of Scotland it might even mean a plaid!

A bride's choice of color for their dress is, and should be, a study in what will best compliment her natural beauty and that which makes her unique. If that means white, wonderful. If that means a wedding dress selection with more color, then that is fine as well.

What Service Can I Expect From My Bridal Store?

When it comes to buying your wedding dress you should make sure your bridal store is giving you’re the very best service & attention it can muster. Here is some good advice when it comes to choosing your bridal store.

Make sure you get on with the assistants from day one, after all you will probably be spending most of the next 12 months in your uderwear with her! When you enter the store for the first time make sure you get a friendly welcome & that you are offered a courteous service with help & information when you ask for it. If you get none of these or the assistants are totally disinterested in you - leave!

Do I need to make an appointment?

Sometimes you can walk into a store midweek & you will not need an appointment but for most bridal stores a weekend appointment is necessary.

If you want to visit a specific store it is always advisable to ring & book an appointment. Many bridal showrooms will only work on an ‘appointment only’ basis anyway so it si best to ring first to avoid disappointment. Once you have an appointment make sure you are fully prepared before you go. Try & have some ideas of what you want & any other information the assistant will need to advise you.

Can I look through sample dresses myself, or am I restricted to dresses the salesperson selects for me?

If you have booked an appointment the assistant will prepare some dresses for you. However, a good store should let you look through the samples for yourself. Your wedding dress is your own personal choice & you should never feel pressured to try on dresses chosen by the store assistant. That said, always have an open mind & consider the options presented to you, you never know, the perfect dress could be a million miles from the one you envisaged when you walked in.

When should I start looking?

The usual advice is to start looking about eight to nine months before the wedding. This is so the manufacturers have time to make your dress & apply any alterations needed from subsequent fittings. Many manufacturers will off a rush service if you need it in a hurry but this can add a considerable amount to the price.

What should I expect from a bridal shop?

A good bridal store should be well laid out, with dresses easily accesible on the rails & not packed together tightly. The fitting rooms should be spacious & include large mirrors so you can see the dress from all angles & full length. The staff should be friendly & knowledgeable, they should in no way be pushy or rush you to make a decision. Good staff should be able to assist & advise you, not just with you dress but with the complete look aswell.

Ask around for recommendations or do some research online. Check to see if a store is a member of any national bridal associations, even if they are not, they may still be a very good store, but you may want to do some further research.

What should I wear?

It is a good idea to wear comfortable clothes & there is no need to get all glammed up. Usually within the first five minutes you will be changing, so the assistant really won’t notice what you are wearing when you walk in.

Who should I take with me?

It is always a good idea to take someone with you, for support, advice & to make sure you don’t loose you head or a huge chunk of you wedding budget! Take a close friend or family member, such as your mom or sister. Leave any small children or babies at home, a bridal store is no place for them & they will get bored very quickly. Stick to just one or two people to avoid overcrowding in the fitting rooms.

What should I bring with me?

Although it doesn’t matter what you wear, it is a good idea to wear good, well fitting lingerie. Some stores will have a selection of bras available for your to use with certain styles of gowns but is always a good idea to bring your own, just in case. Another tip is to wear or bring with a pair of shoes with roughly the same heel height as the ones you want to wear on your wedding day. Bring some hair bands & grips aswell so you can try out each dress with your hair up & down.

How many fittings are usual?

When it comes to fittings, two or three are usual. After the initial fitting you will require another one to make sure the alterations from the first fitting are correct & after that you may need another one for any further adjustments to be made.

Will alterations be included in the price?

When you visit a bridal store you will try on dresses in the size they have on the rail, these are known as samples. When you have made a decision the store will then order that style in your size from the manufacturer. When it arrives you will be called in for a fitting to see what adjustment/alterations are needed (if any). Some retailers will include the cost of alterations in the price on the ticket. Others will charge for alterations on top & they should dicuss this with you first.

Again it is important to wear good underwear & bring shoes to the fittings. If you buy a dress online or from a home trader you are unlikely to get alterations included, in which case you will need to find someone locally who can do them for you.

How will my dress be delivered?

It is usual to collect your dress from the bridal store where you ordered it from although some may deliver it to you for a fee. If you are getting married abroad the shop may also offer to pack it for you.

How should I store my dress?

When you get your dress home, take it out of it’s bag or box & hang it up, covered with a long sheet to protect it & alow it to breathe. This is good practice for before & after the wedding.

Can I change my mind and get the deposit back?

Check the terms & conditions of the bridal store. You will usually have paid a deposit of around 50% when you ordered. You may have period of up to 14 days to change your mind & return it, but you could find yourself having to pay a penalty.

Hiring A Friend For Your Wedding? - (is it a wise thing to do?) With cost cutting becoming a common factor in many weddings these days, it will come as no surprise that many couples are turning to their friends to help them out with certain elements of their special day. But is this a wise decision? and can you always rely on your friends not to let you down when it matters the most?

Imagine asking a close friend to take your wedding photographs for you. Perhaps they had taken a photography course or just had a natural talent for it. You feel confident that they will produce some amazing pictures for you and when they gladly accept you are pleased to have saved such a huge chunk of your wedding budget. But on the day itself, they had left their camera at home by mistake or left it back in the hotel which is over an hours drive away there and back. Then end result, you are let down and those amazing pictures never happen.

For many couples there will come a point during the wedding planning when reality begins to bite and they realize that their budget just won't stretch as far as they like. Well meaning friends will often try to come to the rescue and will offer their services for free or for a lower price that a professional will charge. What they need to ask themselves is if they can rely on them to deliver and are they completely sure that they are up to the task.

If a friend offers to step into the breach in order to save you money, then here are a few questions you will need to ask yourselves before agreeing.

Are they reliable? How organized are they? Are they always late, do they keep to their word or do they come up with some excuse at the last minute? You need to be completely sure that you can rely on them and that they will not leave you in the lurch at the last minute.

Communication? Will they listen to what you want? Will they follow your instructions and carry them out to the letter? Will they keep you updated on how things are progressing? An important aspect of a wedding is that is it done in accordance with the bride and grooms wishes. It is their day after all and so they should have what they want. Will your friend stay true to your wishes or do things their own way?

Can you trust them to make decisions without you? This may seem contrary to what is above, but there may well be occasions when they will have to make a decision without your input, in which case can you trust them to make the right one?

What if something goes wrong? Now mishaps can happen, they can happen to professionals just as easily as they can happen to you, but it what happens next that is the key question here. Imagine trusting your friend to make your wedding cake, they have made occasion cakes before so you are confident with their abilities to produce something stunning for you. But the goes horribly wrong, it's burnt to a cinder or they dropped it on the way to the car! What will you do should something go awry? Whilst it is tempting to save money on the most expensive elements of your wedding day I would advise hiring a professional for the most important parts.

Are they worth the saving? Ask yourself if it is worth it? Will you actually save that much against the price of a professional? Asking your friends to do things for you could result more stress for you, so it really has to be a massive saving to make it worth while.

Could your friendship survive if something went wrong? Hiring a close friend who then lets you down could result in a difficult relationship from that point on. Ask yourself if you are willing to risk your friendship for the sake of a few wedding favors or if your think your friendship is string enough to survive?

It maybe inevitable that you will have to cut costs somewhere, but unless your friends are professionals in a certain field that will be of use to you, I would stay away from hiring them for something as important as your wedding. Whilst you will probably increase your stress over whether of not they are doing the job to your requirements, they are probably fretting over doing it well enough to be of justice to your friendship. My advice would be to hire professionals for the most important elements of your wedding and keep your friends in the �loop� with the lesser parts such as wedding favors, table centers and stationery.

She could rely on the wedding dinner to provide the warmth and reassurance of food, but why not take advantage from the moment the guests enter the reception with edible centerpieces?

Who doesn't relax at the smell of fresh bread? Who can resist the mouth watering allure of a tantalizing treat? By making use of edible centerpiece displays a bride is building her decor on more than just a visual level. By adding taste, smell, and touch she creates an emotionally warm and welcoming effect for each of her guests.

Dig in. There is nothing more inviting than the warmth and comfort of food, which makes edible centerpieces a natural for wedding receptions:

If the cost of a wine bucket is too steep, someone with a bit of crafty know how could use something along the lines of plastic ice cream buckets wrapped in waterproof decorative gift wrap to create an inexpensive, disposable version. Accent the centerpiece with wine themed wedding favors to further the theme and express love and gratitude at the same time.

Hot Bread: Have a basket of fresh baked bread placed on the table just before the guests enter. Who is not warmed and set at ease by the sight and smell of hot fresh bread?

Cheese Board: Arrange a cheese board with your favorite cheese, crackers, and fresh fruit at the center of each table.

Tower of Truffles: For someone with a loved one who is a wizard in the kitchen this is a natural way to get them involved if you choose not to purchase your truffles from your favorite chocolate manufacturer. Either way, a display of truffles is a delightfully inviting centerpiece for a wedding reception - just do not forget to supply decorative favor packaging (you can easily find packaging to fit nearly any decor) for your guests to take a few home to enjoy afterwards!

There are so many possibilities. Have fun with it. Mix and match. There is no right or wrong when it comes to mouth watering edible centerpiece ideas for your reception tables, only what works within the framework of the theme and fashion you are trying to accomplish for your wedding.

Wedding Attendants - Who Pays For What?

Every wedding needs attendants. For most of us a wedding without attendants is more than unthinkable, it undermines the idea of a wedding celebration in the first place. Truly, a nuptial ceremony needs wedding attendants and guests at the minimum along with the bride, groom, and officiate to truly qualify for what most would call a wedding celebration. Short of that and most would assume that the couple simply slipped off and got married to save on the costs associated with a wedding.

So if a wedding ceremony needs wedding attendants the obvious question of the cost involved arrives. And more than that, who is expected to pay for what?

Of course anything can be negotiated. This includes how much you pay of your wedding attendants costs. However, you do so at the risk of looking cheap at best and manipulative at worst. As a general rule, then, it is usually wise to budget for the items that tradition has determined are the areas of responsibility of the couple that are getting married and then if one or more of your attendants offers to cover more of the cost you will have money left over with no hard feelings among attendants who feel taken advantage of.

Traditionally this seems to be the normal expectation:

The attendants cover the cost of:

* Travel expenses

* Clothing (i.e. Tux, dress, etc.)

* Accessories

The bride and groom cover the cost of:

* Transportation to and from the ceremony (often attendants from out of town either do not have transportation or don't know their way around town - making certain they are taken care of saves a lot of time.)

* Accommodations for the wedding party (hotel, rooms in relatives homes, etc.)

* Gifts to the Attendants

* Bouquets / Boutonnieres

Bottom line: Your attendants are granting you a service based on their love for you. It is not, however, a blank check. Respect them by respecting their checkbook.

Consider their financial situation before you choose who to invite as a part of your wedding party. If their financial situation is such that it being a part of the party would put undue pressure on them consider whether you might be able to afford to quietly cover some of their expenses. Or perhaps you might choose to spend a little less on some other aspect of your wedding such as the catering so that you can cover a larger portion of all of your attendants costs associated with being a part of your wedding.

Either way, speak openly with them about the financial aspects of being a wedding attendant when you ask them to join your wedding party. Give them all the information they need up front to make an knowledgeable assessment about their capability of being a part of your wedding. This will give them a gracious way out if they just can not afford the cost - and almost all of us have been there at one time or another.

Ultimately, your wedding day is about celebrating your new marriage with your friends and family. A wise couple will find a way to make sure that the costs associated with having wedding attendants will not spoil the party. Do so and your attendants will be a great part of your wedding memories.

Bridal Beauty 101 - Some Helpful Tips

Your wedding day makeup can either make you look older (especially in photos), or younger.

It's important to start your beauty preparations far in advance to your special day.

Here Are Some Helpful Tips You Can Put Into Action Now, To Benefit From On Your Wedding Day, And Everyday!

DO
If you have facial fine lines and wrinkles, Choose a quality (more expensive) facial foundation. There are so many brands such as Mac, Avon, Cover Girl, etc., but each carries lines that aid in diminishing fine lines, and refer to age defying qualities. It's worth trying some of these out for your wedding day look. Some are really good. My personal favorite is Maybelline - Instant Age Rewind. I've received a few compliments when I where this (I'm 41).
For Oil Control, & A More Silky Smooth Finish - Add a more perfect appearance to your face using loose translucent powders.(Minimizes the appearance of pores, doesn't build up in fine lines).

DO NOT
Avoid makeup entirely and some grooming of the face for your wedding day.
Some brides don't like makeup, or wear it on an every day basis. Let's face it some of you don't need it, however when it comes to wedding pictures, do not go without any makeup, or facial grooming at all.

Whether or not you will be using a professional makeup artist, below are some things to consider.

What should you consider?

EYES
When it comes to wedding photos, many brides don't realize that no eye makeup at all can mean naked looking eyes (in a non-flattering way) in photos. If you don't like eye liner, consider applying just a light line to the top lid only, and consider some artificial lashes that add POW to your eyes. Older brides who have under eye lines should take this route especially by adding liner and mascara, or artificial lashes only the top lids. By doing this, you draw attention upward away from beneath your eyes, where you don't want people looking, thus adding a more youthful, wide eyed appeal. Think Bambi!

LIPS
Again, when it comes to your wedding pictures, no lipstick or lip color will look drab in your wedding day photos. Again, if you don't like makeup, consider lining your lips at a minimum with a light shade lip liner, smudge the ends with your fingers, and extend the shade to fill in the rest of your lips (to avoid the traced look), and then add some shiny lip gloss to give your lips a fuller look.

BROWS
Bushy eyebrows are a distraction, and a beauty no no. Brook Shields got away with it, but that was quite some time ago. Consider having your brows professionally tweezed before your wedding day if you are afraid to do this yourself. The proper arching can make you look more refreshed, happy, and younger.

TEETH

Your teeth are the most important aspect of your smile. Many brides set aside a special portion of their wedding budget to get their teeth professionally whitened. Cosmetic dentistry is not only a healthy investment, but one that will boost your confidence on your wedding day with a gorgeous smile!

DO
Wear Sunscreen daily on your face and exposed areas of your body. SPF 15 or more.
If you must have a golden tan on your wedding day, consider using a tanning lotion that darkens your skin tone. These artificial tanning lotions are much better today than they used to be and provide a very natural, believable looking tan. With the effects of the sun on skin (aging), skin cancer etc. being more in the spotlight than ever today, it's worth finding healthy alternatives to the old fashioned sun bathing.
Some Day Spas offer airbrush tanning, and this is a healthy, great looking alternative to lying in the sun.

DO
Exfoliate your face and body at least one time each week. More often for oily skin.
If you don't do this, or don't know what it is, it's time to learn. There are many great exfoliating products available at department stores, drug stores, and places like Target, or Wal-Mart.
Exfoliating your skin is the process of using a mild abrasive lotion or sponge on the face and body to rub off, or eliminate dry, dead skin cells, thus revealing newer, fresher skin cells.
The process if done regularly, can revive dull looking skin, and add a more youthful, healthy look to the skin and body.
Exfoliation can also extend the life of any tan. One product I like personally can be found at Target stores, by St. Ives Swiss Formula Apricot Scrub (Invigorating). Once you try this scrub, you'll love it, and the way it makes your skin feel. Another great product for faces in addition to the above mentioned product it Noxzema face cream. Rub it on your face in the shower, or over the sink, and gently brush your face with a soft bristle tooth brush (using circular motion). This can be done gently under the eyes, nose, and the rest of the face where it may be difficult to use the scrub. Your face will feel refreshed.

IMPORTANT: It's always important to test any product or method on your skin before using it full-force. Always use sun screen after exfoliating as fresh delicate skin will be vulnerable to the sun, and expect a slight pink hue to your skin after exfoliating as well. If irritation begins, stop all treatments, or adjust the method and product. Use any method with discretion and at your own risk.

DO NOT
Starve yourself, or crash diet before your wedding day. It is a proven fact (ask any wedding consultant), that crash dieting, starvation diets leads only to fatigued, cranky brides that often faint or feel faint on their wedding day. Crash dieting also leads to the individual often regaining the lost weight, and then some after the wedding day is over.
Instead Try The Following:

1. Drink plenty of icy cold water daily. Studies have shown that for every 8 oz. glass of icy cold water you drink the body burns 25 to 50 calories extra. Drink 4 glasses spread out throughout the day, and burn an extra 100 or more calories! Don't like water you say? Try substituting a glass or two with some Crystal Light (5 calories per glass). It's better than not drinking any ice cold fluids.

2. Get plenty of sleep each night 8 hours minimum if possible. Recent studies show that people who lack adequate sleep each night have a decrease in the hormone called Leptin. Leptin lets the body know when it is full and should stop eating, therefore with sleep deprivation being a problem, an individual is more likely to be have more aggressive cravings, and a more insatiable appetite.
Also, Scientists suspect that sleep deprivation lowers person's basal metabolic rate which is the number of calories you burn when you rest.

After the wedding dress and bride's bouquet, maybe nothing is so powerful a wedding symbol as the wedding cake. It's so ubiquitous, many people just assume the wedding cake has always been a part of wedding celebrations everywhere.

Like all popular beliefs, there's some truth to that idea, though of course the real facts are much more fascinating and a whole lot more colorful.

The Wedding Cake's Early Days

During the heady days of the Roman Empire, wedding guests were served not one cake but a sumptuous collection of many small treats and pastries as a kind of wedding party favor. In some parts of the empire, one single cake was dropped over the bride's head at the reception, as a way of wishing the couple good luck in the future.

Later, during the Middle Ages, many guests would bring small cakes to the wedding celebration. The cakes were all piled atop a single table, creating the beginning of the tiered wedding cake known today. As a tradition, a bride and groom that could still kiss over the pile of cakes were considered to have good luck in the upcoming marriage.

Modern Times

Wedding cakes began to change and grow in the 19th Century, when new means of refrigeration could keep their ingredients fresh for much longer periods.

The modern wedding cake is a kind of homage to St. Bride's Church, a famous English Medieval Chapel. The church's spire includes several spires, much like a tiered cake.

Many modern couples have adopted the wedding cake design to display their own interests or passions. For example, a couple fascinated by the Renaissance may choose to decorate their cake with decorations specific to that time period. The bride and groom figures atop the cake may also reflect their hobbies and pastimes.

Because modern wedding cakes have become so elaborate, their preparation time has steadily grown. Wedding planners are encouraged to make arrangements with a pastry chef up to three months in advance of the wedding reception.
