Take love to the outdoors! Why have a bunch of loved ones sit in a hot stuffy room when you can be out embracing the warm summer weather? This is where the garden party theme comes into play for your wedding ideas. Where can you have a garden party? A private park, a beautiful yacht club, or the yard of your own home.

What does it take to pull off a successful garden party? Patience! Start planning your wedding decorations and preparations in advance. Who have you invited to the wedding? The young and elderly need a lot of shade on very hot days. Make sure that you have shady trees or large umbrellas to protect them from the hot sun. On that note, it’s important to emphasize sunscreen for all! You want everyone to have wonderful stories to tell for years! Not stories of the most painful sunburn of 2006.








It’s not very difficult to emphasize nature in a pastoral setting. Prepare tiki torches and electrical multi-colored lights if the party will extend into the late hours. Citronella candles will keep biting insects at bay while providing extra light.


Set up a Gazebo for foods and desserts. Everyone will form a line and serve themselves. Prepare garden salads, fruits, vegetables, floral cakes, and plenty of cold salads. Make sure you have plenty of chairs and tables for your guests to sit in. You can decorate the area with flowers pots, faux bumble bees, small summer statues that emit water, and ivy.


Play relaxing music throughout the day and pull out the real dancing music after supper. Encourage women to take of their high heels and have a good time. Encourage men to loosen their ties and live a little. You want everyone to have a great time in a lively atmosphere. Make sure your music is appropriate for everyone. While younger people like the popular hits on the radio, older people may enjoy a blast from the past. If you hire a DJ, make sure they do requests.






A garden theme party, is exactly as it sounds. It’s a summer wedding that embraces life, nature, and everything beautiful in this world. Make sure you hold your party in a desirable safe location for children to wander and play free from harm. If there’s a lake or pond, make sure that an older child never leaves little ones unattended. If everyone has a responsibility, your summer wedding party is sure to be a smash!

So You’re Planning an Outdoor Wedding! Things You Need To Know.

The best advice I can give you is to test your ideas in the actual location under realistic conditions to eliminate unpleasant surprises. Work with an experience coach or wedding consultant if you can, and then keep in mind the following things:

1. THE WIND

Wind can affect the temperature, making it hotter or colder; the bridesmaids’ dresses; everyone’s hair; and whether the ceremony can be heard. Test beforehand; it can be as simple as moving the tables around a corner, or across the park to a more sheltered area.

Plan decorations and tablecloths you can anchor attractively; choose weighted fabrics for the attendants; warn them about the hair thing; and consider the need for a souns system and mike clips. If you're renting a tent, make sure its wind-worthy.

2. THE COMFORT OF YOUR GUESTS.

Okay, if you’re getting married in San Diego you may hit a long spell of “perfect” weather, but failing that, your event may be hotter, wetter, or colder than many guests would prefer.

If you’re having a lot of out-of-towners, particularly, include information about the weather possibilities on an insert with the invitation and accommodation recommendations. (I went to one in Dallas in July; 111 degrees that day, and boy were the people from Colorado and La Jolla dressed wrong!)

If it’s hot, provide iced bottles of water when they arrive, hand fans, a tent with fans.

If it’s chilly, tent, warmers, a hot beverage when they arrive, lap blankets, portable heaters.

3. NOTHING WILL HELP IF IT POURS DOWN RAIN. YOU MUST HAVE A PLAN B.

4. HOW TOUGH ARE YOU?

Come on now, if you’re at all the fussy type, or prone to nerves, this simply isn’t for you. You’ll have to manage your hair outside, for heaven's sake.

5. THE CALL OF THE WILD.

Inclement weather – or even just ordinary ocean waves and bird calls – can wreak havoc with still photographs and videos alike. I recall an amateur wedding video where most of the sound was the wind whistling around. There may also be a fountain or waterfall, dogs barking, kids screaming, birds chirping.

6. DECORATIONS

I've seen even cloth tablecloths blow in the wind, turning over glasses, candles and centerieces. Wind, bird poop, the shades of night falling ... Be xtremely realistic when planning your decorations. Actually test them outdoors.

7. NATURE RED IN TOOTH AND CLAW.

It’s from a poem, okay, but that’s where you’re going to be. Don’t fantasize about how “romantic” the place is; go take a look. Think realistically about beer bottles and cans on the beach; getting the lawn mowed and weeded; planting seasonal flowers; bugs, flies, snakes and spiders; the sounds of barking dogs and (uninvited) children, or, for that matter these days, teen drugs dealers in the park.

Have a visit with your eyes open. Then do what you need to do, or resolve it’s “good enough” and don’t worry. The world of nature isn’t going to shut down just because it’s your wedding.

8. SAFETY ... ALL AGES

You’re in love. You’re planning your big day. However, you must limit the things you have to worry about if you're going to enjoy yourself. A celebration in a park by a lake would be nice, or by the pool at your aunt’s mansion, or even at the beach, but in actuality, if there are going to be children there, and drinking … there’s also going to be the chance for a real tragedy.

Which brings up – all ages will likely be there, and must be thought of. Can you really picture your great-grandmother standing in the surf with her hair blowing, stepping over man-o-wars while picking sand out of her teeth … for long? Can the kiddos go that long without a restroom? Many people can’t stand for a long time; others need protection from extreme heat and cold.

9. THE FOOD.

Can you say "health department?" Mayonnaise (and food items with that as an ingredient) can’t sit out in the hot sun for more than an hour or so. Avoid perishable dishes. Wind can make it hard to get the grill lit. Ice cream won’t do when it’s 90 degrees outside, nor will hot hors d’eouvres last long when it’s 50 degrees outside.

10. THE SUN, THE MOON AND THE STARS.

Yes, he promised you that … and you’ll be promising it to your guests, one way or another. Keep in mind the sun moves through the sky, and plan your event (and the photographs) accordingly. One of the most beautiful weddings I went to was planned at a hillside lodge, with we guests arriving just as the sun was setting.

There are many factors that need to be considered when planning a summer wedding. Besides the usual details such as wedding attire, the wedding location, the wedding flowers, the wedding photography, and choosing who will be in your wedding party, with a summer wedding you also need to be involved with factors such as the weather, the location, the season, tourists, storage and travel.

The Weather - Check Your Wedding Day Weather Here

By far, the biggest factor to consider as you plan a summer wedding is the unpredictable wedding weather. In many locations, the weather during the summer months is considerably hotter and dryer than it is during the rest of the year. If you plan to host your summer wedding somewhere outdoors, such as a beach, the weather could greatly effect how your wedding day goes. You and your guests could grow extremely uncomfortable if there is little to no air flow during your wedding, and if it rains, it could become an even less enjoyable experience.

Therefore, if you plan on having your wedding ceremony somewhere that is extremely warm or a place that could get an impromptu rain storm, consider the things you can do to make the event more comfortable for your guests. Providing seats for everyone in shaded areas could offer a suitable atmosphere that would allow everyone to enjoy themselves as you and the love of your life pronounce your nuptials. Shortening the ceremony, and holding your wedding reception under a tent that enables air flow, can combine the perks of having both an outdoor wedding location and indoor wedding venue.

If you are having a summer wedding, you also need to consider how the weather can affect planned details such as reception locations, wedding photographs, and travel accommodations for you and your guests. Many couples like to book a back-up plan, or a rain venue, just in case your reception can not be held outdoors as you had originally planned. You will also want to discuss with your wedding photographer beforehand specific locations where you can take photos in case of inclement weather. You may also want to suggest to friends and family to plan their travel accommodations as close to the wedding date as possible, just in case the weather prohibits them from making it to your wedding on time. If you are having a summer wedding, it is a great idea to have back up plans for all of your details.

The wedding location is always important, but during the summer months they are even more important. During the wedding planning process, it is important to question if your wedding venue has air conditioning, and if it is prepared for handling unpredictable weather issues such as flooding or thunderstorms. Having a back up venue will also be beneficial if a bad storm or spring flooding occurs before your wedding day, forcing you change your location ahead of time.

For example, if you plan on reciting your vows at a beautiful ski resort during June, be sure to consider first if any resorts are even open during the off season. Many locations will hold different or shorter hours during their off season, in which you can visit them to see if they can accommodate your event.

If you are having your summer wedding at a popular location, tourists may be a factor to consider beforehand. For example, if you and your fiancé met in Disney World, and want to get married in front of the Magic Kingdom, it is important to know beforehand that there will be a good amount of tourists watching as you say “I do.” The amount of tourists in an area can also impact details such as hotel reservations, and photographs. However, if you are planning on having a rather large wedding, certain locations will be glad to accommodate you since your contributions can help them flourish.

Storage and Travel

During the summer months, storage and travel accommodations will need to be strongly considered beforehand. For example, if you and your husband are planning to head off to your honeymoon directly after the wedding, you want to make sure you have a temperature controlled storage unit available. This unit can safely hold items such as your dress, flowers, gifts, and other items that you might not have time to deal with until you get home from your vacation. High heat temperatures can severely destroy keepsakes that you will have wanted to keep forever. Therefore, planning a safe place for them to be held before you leave for your trip can be extremely beneficial.
